How Do I Get My Child an Autism Diagnosis in Sugar Land? (Fort Bend Parent's Guide)
Quick answer: To start ABA therapy in Texas, your child needs a medical autism diagnosis from a licensed psychologist or physician. In the Sugar Land area you have three paths: Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) for children under 3, a Fort Bend ISD school evaluation, or a private diagnostic evaluation. Only a private medical diagnosis qualifies your child for insurance-covered ABA therapy.
Start with ECI if your child is under 3
Early Childhood Intervention is a free statewide program for children from birth to 36 months with developmental delays. You don't need a doctor's referral — any parent can self-refer. ECI doesn't diagnose autism, but it screens, supports, and connects you to specialists who do.
School evaluation vs. private diagnosis
A Fort Bend ISD evaluation determines whether your child qualifies for special education services at school. It does not give you a medical diagnosis, and it won't be accepted by insurance for private ABA. A private evaluation by a licensed psychologist gives you the medical diagnosis that directs treatment and unlocks insurance coverage.
What a private evaluation costs
In Texas, private autism evaluations typically run $600–$2,000 depending on the provider and your insurance. Many commercial plans cover part of the cost.
